Together with the emphasis on the technical skills acquisition, higher education institutions have been making an effort on developing and updating undergraduate transferable competences in order to diminish the gap between academic training and working world entrance. In other words, to recognize market needs, teachers and students representations about human resources requirements, and combine them to boost employability in business professions, must be a priority in today’s knowledge based economy. Taking into account the new teaching realities brought by Bologna agreement, as well as the exertion universities have been done in order to tune in enterprises and curricula, this activity intended to accede the way recruiters, alumni and college teachers from Catholic University [CU; Porto Regional Center (PRC), Economics and Management Faculty (MEF)] positioned themselves relatively to some recruitment and selection criteria for management and economics professions. Using a reflection activity based upon Régnier’s Abacus, participants were asked to positioned individually as experts (in their roles as recruiters, teachers or former CU alumni) in identifying market value skills, and afterwards to build a group debated conclusion to present to a larger audience. Results pointed out only one total consensual factor, that is, flexibility and adjustment skills as the most important factors when recruiting, followed by entrepreneur capabilities and valorization of work experiences in the candidates curricula. Discrepancies were found by group of experts when college of origin was the discussion subject, although there was consensus about the hierarchical place order in the three groups.Market valued skills, Management and Economics College Teachers and Graduates, Employers, Régnier’s Abacus based activity

This study presents preliminary results of the PSP Project, addressing students' soft skills development within the context of HEI. Theoretical framework is grounded in Person-Environment Fit theories (Rounds & Hesketh, 1994), and also in Evans (2001) starfish model. Study 1 aimed to identify Economics and Business graduates' Market-Valued Skills Profile, collecting data through semi-structured interviews with HR managers and former students focus groups. Study 2 assessed students' confidence level regarding skills using a self-report questionnaire (Miles & Grummon, 2006). Career development representations were also assessed (Savickas, 2002; Gonçalves, 2006). Additional data was collected through open-ended questions focusing on work and other extracurricular experiences. Results from Study 1 highlight soft skills as multidimensional construct where different interrelated skills contribute to graduates' employability. Study 2 reveals students' positive self-perception regarding those skills, although limited vocational experiences were reported.Soft Skills, Career development, higher education students; employability

Conspicuous distinction: a reading of Veblen and Bourdieu

    Get PDF
The paper provides a comparative reading of two influential works of Veblen and Bourdieu, on cultural consumption. Approaches to consumers‟ taste and preferences are predominantly essentialist. However, Veblen and Bourdieu focused on the relationship between consumption and social divisions. Their views are, nonetheless, contrasting. Veblen developed a somewhat speculative approach centred on waste and conspicuous consumption as evidence for the natural quest for social honour. Bourdieu drew on empirical research to argue that culture stems from class and is related to necessity. The concepts of habitus, cultural capital and field interact to provide a complex and detailed account of different tastes emerging within different social classes. The result is a variegated social space with different statuses and an ongoing struggle for the definition of „good” and “bad” taste.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Accessing movies' emotional information

    Get PDF
Emotional information is being used in several systems as a way to understand users while interacting with computers or as a way to explore content classification. Movies are a medium emotionally empowered and technological developments and trends for media convergence are turning video into a dominant and pervasive medium, and online video is becoming a growing entertainment activity on the web. In this paper we present a user interface for movies' emotion exploration based on a previous usability study. Felt - is an application for movie and users' emotions exploration as a way to access movies by its emotional properties or as a way of recommending movies by the analysis of users emotional profiles. In this paper we also propose novel interactive mechanisms for movie's emotions exploration.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Sharing Video Emotional Information in the Web

Video growth over the Internet changed the way users search, browse and view video content. Watching movies over the Internet is increasing and becoming a pastime. The possibility of streaming Internet content to TV, advances in video compression techniques and video streaming have turned this recent modality of watching movies easy and doable. Web portals as a worldwide mean of multimedia data access need to have their contents properly classified in order to meet users’ needs and expectations. The authors propose a set of semantic descriptors based on both user physiological signals, captured while watching videos, and on video low-level features extraction. These XML based descriptors contribute to the creation of automatic affective meta-information that will not only enhance a web-based video recommendation system based in emotional information, but also enhance search and retrieval of videos affective content from both users’ personal classifications and content classifications in the context of a web portal.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Tag-IT: embedding audio in objects and surfaces

In this paper we present Tag-IT an interface that consists of a module and a set of tags in which children can record and then playback audio, the tags can be attached to objects and surfaces. Tag-IT allows users to create their own digital content without the need of a computer, which makes it flexible for various contexts. Tag-IT was used in a workshop in Iskandar– Malaysia in the scope of the ACE 2015 Children Creativity Labs. During the workshop children used Tag-IT to create their own activities, playfully engaging in collaborative work.We thank the Marlborough College, all the children participants and their teachers, the chairs of the Children Creativity Lab, Eva Cerezo, Jerry Fails and Yoram Chisik, without them this workshop would not have been possible. This work was partially supported by the Human Potential Operating Programme (HPOP) of the European Social Fund and the Portuguese Ministry for Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES) with the Postdoctoral Grant SFRH/BPD/111891/2015, and by the Portuguese Foundation for the Science and the Technology, within the projects UID/CED/00317/2013

    Get PDF
